DTS noise and resolution calculator
How small a temperature difference can you see, how far down the fibre, and how long do you have to average for it? Move the sliders.
How to read it. Temperature noise is the scatter of repeated readings at one point. Three times the noise is roughly the smallest step you can call real from a single profile. Noise falls with the square root of averaging time and of spatial resolution, and rises with distance because less light comes back from far down the fibre. Every connector and splice costs light twice, on the way out and on the way back.
What this is not. A quote for any particular instrument. The curve is anchored to one published reference point, 0.11 K at 2 km on single-mode fibre with 0.5 m resolution and five minutes of averaging, and scaled with textbook physics. Real instruments differ in laser power, receiver noise and coding, so use it to plan a campaign, then measure.
