Field power calculator: battery days and solar panel size
A battery, a panel and a schedule. How long does the site run on its own, and in which months does the sun carry it? Move the sliders.
How to read it. The average draw is the measuring power times the fraction of time spent measuring, plus the standby power. The battery figure assumes the usable fraction for the chemistry and no charging. The monthly bars compare what the panel delivers, average peak-sun hours for the latitude and month with a 70 % system efficiency and typical cloud, against what the instrument uses. A month is carried when the panel delivers more than the load on the average day; snow on the panel, shading and a tilt far from optimum all take from it.
Defaults. The defaults are a temperature-sensing instrument in the field: 21 W while measuring, 0.6 W standby, a five-minute profile every hour, a 100 Ah lithium battery, a 100 W panel in Denmark. Continuous acoustic sensing does not duty-cycle; set the interval to continuous to see what that needs.
